Nasra was one of the first five Somali individuals to move to Barron in 1997 to work at the turkey processing plant. She volunteered to help later arrivals find housing, employment and mediated conflicts.
She was involved in the startup of the nonprofit Somali Community Corporation, founded in 1999, and has been president throughout its history. It receives funding from the Workforce Center in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, and Barron County Social Services to provide employment, English language and daily living skills for the Somali refugees arriving in Barron.
